2010 Pershing Rifles Drill Classic
By: Cadet Staff Sgt Ian
Kelly
On
February 27th 2010, the RCHS JROTC Drill Team
attended the 2010 Pershing Rifles Drill Classic at
Eastern Kentucky University. Taking three
well-trained color guards, the Drill Team was aching
to bring some hardware home, in the form of a trophy
or two. They would have to compete against, and
defeat, twenty four other color guards from thirteen
other schools all around Kentucky. The first color
guard team that competed for RCHS was composed of
Captain Ben Whitaker, Lieutenant Colonel Samantha
Bussell, 1st Lieutenant David Lunceford, and Major
Joseph Doan, who have been in the same color guard
since 2007. The second team consisted of Corporal
Story White, Sergeant Logan Durham, Corporal Jacob
Houk, and Sergeant Justin Houk, a group of dedicated
freshman. And last but not least the third team that
we took consisted of 1st Lieutenant Jesse Artley,
1st Lieutenant Cullan White, Private First Class
Tiffany Howard, and 2nd Lieutenant John Alexander.
In addition, the Rocket Battalion’s guidon bearer
and photographer Staff Sgt Ian Kelly also competed,
although only in the Individual Drill events.
Unfortunately, color guards two and three did not
place, but the first color guard tied with Pulaski
County for 2nd place. As a tie breaker, EKU’s head
judge, Captain Chatiguy, graded both color guards a
second time. In the end, Pulaski scored higher,
putting RCHS at third place. The final events,
Individual Drill with or without a rifle, were by
far the most difficult events. 1st Lieutenant David
Lunceford placed 7th in armed drill and Major Joseph
Doan placed 14th in unarmed drill. Overall, this was
a very enjoyable and instructional event, giving our
Drill Team some much-needed critiquing. Plus, the
competition yielded some hard-earned awards for our
battalion.
